Get to Work! Observations and Opportunities for Livelihoods in Professional Permaculture Design and Implementation

The current climate and economic uncertainty have forced more individuals, corporations, and institutions than ever to explore and invest in regenerative human infrastructure. Vast resources are available to fund total overhauls of Business-as-Usual systems (food, housing, economics, etc.), and the opportunities are endless for Permaculture entrepreneurs who can effectively articulate and deliver solutions.

We need dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of well-equipped designers deeply steeped in a generalist’s knowledge of Permaculture, combined with a specialist’s knowledge in one-or-more fields. (As David Holmgren has put it “Jacks of all trades, masters of one.”)

In this presentation and discussion, Leonard Barrett will share his observations of the state of the trade, and the numerous opportunities for both aspiring and established Permaculture professionals.

Leonard Barrett is a permaculture designer, land planning consultant, and teacher based in Portland, Oregon. His design firm, Barrett Ecological (www.barrettecological.com), provides design and planning services to a wide array of residential, commercial, and community/institutional projects, ranging from small urban lots to 1000+ acre rural properties.

Leonard has taught and lectured at colleges and universities throughout the northwest, and guests instructs at many permaculture and and ecological design courses. His design work is featured in the best selling permaculture book Gaia’s Garden: A Homescale Guide to Permaculture by Toby Hemenway.
